It didn't take long for someone to jump on Cartems former location in Mount Pleasant.
And fittingly it's another purveyor of donuts (but also more).
North Vancouver's Cream Pony Donuts and Southern Fried Chicken has announced plans to move into the space at 2190 Main St.
"We've actually wanted to have Cream Pony in Mount Pleasant ever since this crazy dream started," says co-founder Alix Finn in a video posted to Instagram.
She and her mom, Erin Smith, are behind the donut and fried chicken shop, which opened in 2021.
"We knew that this building was going to be a hot commodity because look at it, I mean it's absolutely stunning," she says.
However, opening a donut shop in the former home of one of Vancouver's most popular donut shops may have its challenges.
"To live up to the challenge and legacy of Cartems is also terrifying, but we're not scared. No!" says Finn.
The new location matches the original in North Vancouver's Lower Lonsdale neighbourhood.
"All we ever wanted was to be in a cool heritage building, just like we are in North Vancouver," Finn says.
An opening date hasn't been announced yet.
"Coming someday soon is going to be some more donuts in Mount Pleasant...and fried chicken," Finn says in the video.
Along with the foods listed in Cream Pony Donuts and Southern Fried Chicken's name, the restaurant carries sides like tater-tots, cornbread and pickles.
Cartems closure
Cartems, which at one point had three locations in Metro Vancouver, closed its last shops on Feb. 14, 2025.
Long lines stood out front to buy the last donuts from the decade-old business.
The closure even inspired a local documentary filmmaker.
