Fancy a proper plate of fish and chips?
Metro Vancouver is soon to be home to the second location of a B.C. restaurant that was launched in the Okanagan by a family that came to Canada from England.
Harry's Fish and Chips will be opening this summer in Delta at the Tsawwassen Commons shopping centre. The Commons is the shopping centre located across the street from the popular Tsawwassen Mills mall.
Opened in 2018 in Vernon, Harry's Fish and Chips has leased the space at the Commons that had previously been home to a Nando's location, senior property manager Nancy Westfall confirmed with the Delta Optimist.
The Tsawwassen Nando's was among the chain's four B.C. restaurant closures in spring 2020; all of the shuttered Nando's locations were situated within Metro Vancouver.
Of the original Harry's in Vernon, one enthusiastic diner reviewed their visit as follows: "The owners are originally from England so they know how to make proper Fish & Chips. Some of the highlights for me..... they use quality ingredients, including freshly made (rather than frozen) chips; the fish is excellent quality and they offer a good choice between Cod, Haddock and other types, in two different sizes; they offer a choice of side items, including Coleslaw or the traditional Mushy Peas."
Those "other types" of fish offered are pollock, salmon, and halibut, according to the Harry's Vernon menu. Other things going in the fryer include chicken strips, prawns, calamari, and wings. The menu also includes British faves like pies (Steak & Curry, for example) and sausages. Starters and sides include onion rings, samosas, and poutine, yam fries, and even pickled eggs. You can opt for a beef, chicken, or fish burger, and there are numerous combo meals for kids and adults.
The ex-Nando's space at 4949 Canoe Pass Way in Tsawwassen is licensed and seats 138 at full capacity.
There hasn’t been a fish and chips specialty restaurant in the South Delta area since Robb’s Fish and Chips closed on 56th Street in Tsawwassen and a fire led to the closure of Chung’s Fish and Chips in Ladner Village back in 2015. Prior to that, Uncle Herbert's was a fixture in the village for years at the current Il Posto location.
