Musical kitchens: Multiple Vancouver restaurants opening, relocating on Commercial Drive, Fraser Street

One has left Commerical Drive, one is moving across the street and one is moving into the neighbourhood

Three restaurants are opening in new locations in a sort of musical chairs situation. Beeryani Indian Bistro is opening in Viet Family's former location on Commercial Drive, while Viet Family is moving across to the road to where Saki Maki was, but the sushi restaurant has already relocated to Fraser Street in a new space next to Penang Bistro.

Is this a game of musical kitchens?

It seems three Vancouver restaurants are involved in an unusual series of openings and relocations.

The first to move was Sake Maki, a sushi restaurant that had been open for more than 13 years on Commercial Drive. It left its longtime home at 1414 Commercial Dr. and has relocated to 3932 Fraser St. Its new spot actually shares an address with Malaysian restaurant Penang Bistro and is directly next door to Good Sushi.

Sake Maki's old home isn't staying empty for long, as Viet Family has closed its original space and is moving across the road. The Vietnamese spot with soup and vegan fare opened at 1431 Commercial Dr. just over a year ago in June 2022.

"We promise to be back soon with new items, new vibes, and fully vegan," Viet Family's operators promised in an Instagram post in December 2023.

But their original spot isn't staying empty for long either.

Beeryani Indian Kitchen will be "coming soon" to the space. There are already two Beeryanis: one on Denman in the West End and one on Main in the Riley Park neighbourhood. The Beeryani location at 4129 Main St. opened up last year in what had been the short-lived Yasmina Bakery.
