As of noon Wednesday, about 20 per cent of flights at YVR have been cancelled due to the on-going snowfall.
About 20 centimetres of snow has fallen at the airport today, and YVR said crews are continuing to work to keep runways, taxiways and aprons clear.
This includes nine kilometres of runways, including the north, south and crosswind runways.
"Safety remains our top priority," YVR said in a statement. "While our teams are actively clearing snow and ice, and operating our de-icing facilities, fewer flights are able to arrive and depart in response to winter weather conditions."
While there have been cancellations, the airport said many flights have been put in place "proactively" by airlines as the airport manages the current situation.
The airport is cautioning travellers to check the status of their flights with their airline.
"If your flight has been delayed or cancelled, it is best to rebook online or over the phone, rather than come to the airport," YVR said in a statement. "Many airlines, including Air Canada and WestJet, currently have flexible rebooking policies in place."
The departures board at YVR shows several flights cancelled and some delayed on Wednesday.
According to Weatherhood, the snow is expected to continue in Richmond throughout the day.
