Vancouver Police announced Friday an arrest in the July 27 murder of a man in the city's West End neighbourhood.

Maximus Roland Hayes, 23, is in custody and has been charged with one count of manslaughter for the stabbing death of Thomus Donaghy, 41.

Donaghy was working at the Overdose Prevention site connected to St. Paul’s Hospital, when he went outside, say police, on the night of July 27. While outside, Donaghy became involved in a physical altercation with a man in the area of Comox and Thurlow streets. The suspect then stabbed Donaghy.

Police received a report of a man having been stabbed via a 9-1-1 call at around 8:30 p.m. that evening. Donaghy was found at the scene and transported to hospital, where he died of his injuries.

After appealing to the public for tips and witness information on July 31, Hayes, a Victoria resident, was identified as the suspect.

Hayes was arrested by VPD officers in North Vancouver on August 13. The manslaughter charge was approved by the BC Prosecution service.

Donaghy's death is Vancouver's ninth homicide of 2020.
