A trio of recreational boaters avoided serious injury Sunday by jumping into the waters of the Fraser River after the small vessel they were on exploded.
The explosion happened at approximately 3 p.m., not long after the 20-foot aluminum jet boat was launched into the river from Musqueam.
Two adult men in their 40s and a teenager were taking the newly-acquired boat for a test ride, according to Vancouver Police.
Police say the explosion was likely caused by the fuel tank, which had just been replaced.
The boaters were not able to don life jackets before jumping overboard, however, they did push the boat to shallow water as it burned. One person was treated for a minor injury.
The VPD's Marine Unit responded to the explosion and came to the aid of the boaters with assistance from BC Ambulance, Coast Guard and Vancouver Fire Rescue Services.
There was no significant environmental damage and no charges or police fines are expected, adds the VPD.
