After over a year, the Vancouver Police Department has arrested a man and charges have been laid in conjunction with a fatal collision in downtown Vancouver.

The incident happened on June 22, 2023; that morning, around 5 a.m. police reported a serious collision at the intersection of West Georgia and Burrard streets.

"The driver of a Plymouth Voyager minivan struck a Honda Accord that was stopped for a light at West Georgia and Burrard Street. A passenger in the Honda died at the scene, and two others in the vehicle were hospitalized," reads a police press release.

At the time of the incident, police stated the passenger, a 28-year-old man, died at the scene. At the same time, the van caught fire and the driver had to be extracted from it. He was also taken to the hospital.

On Aug. 13, 2024, six charges were approved by the BC Prosecution in the case.

Steven Austin Trakalo faces one count of criminal negligence causing death, one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, and two counts each of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm.

Trakalo was arrested by the VPD in Chilliwack earlier this month. He's since been released.

B.C.'s online court services don't list any other prior convictions for Trakalo.
