Coca-Cola versus Pepsi is one of the biggest and oldest questions in North America when it comes to brand loyalty.
The two megabrands (each valued in the hundreds of billions of dollars) are globally recognized. For better or worse, that includes Vancouver.
So we asked Vancouverites their preference, including both the diet and "Zero" options of each brand.
The clear winner is Coca-Cola, which matches most other markets. Oddly, it appears residents of the city prefer regular Coke to a greater degree than Pepsi. When just local votes are counted the classic Coke flavour beats Pepsi about 45 per cent to about 18 per cent. When all readers are included that changes to 41 for Coke and 22 for Pepsi. That's around an eight-point gain for the blue bottles.
The classic flavours are mostly dominant over the diet and zero options, except for Coke Zero, which, in Vancouver, is the second most popular choice, just edging out classic Pepsi.
In all categories Pepsi lost to the corresponding Coke product.
Overall Vancouver seems a city firmly in Coca-Cola's grasp, as the trio of pops pulled in almost 72 per cent of those polled locally, with Pepsi collecting 28 per cent. When the whole audience is taken into account 66 per cent prefer Coke compared to 34 per cent for Pepsi products.
That's unfortunate, as Coke products are becoming less common in the city.
