Vancouver firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire on May 5, 2023, in a house under construction on Venables Street in East Vancouver.

A large fire engulfed a home in East Vancouver Friday morning (May 5).

The flames started shortly before 8 a.m. in a home under construction in the 1900 block of Venables Street.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) responded to the two-alarm fire after "multiple reports of large flames and black smoke," Asst. Chief Ken Gemmill tells V.I.A. "Flames were approximately 20 feet coming from the roof."

The fire and smoke could be seen across the neighbourhood.

While the fire didn't spread to adjacent structures, neighbouring houses did sustain minor smoke damage. The house is "a full loss," notes Gemmill. The roof and second floor of the house are burnt off and badly damaged.

There was a heavy police presence at the scene when fire crews arrived and VFRS deems the fire suspicious.

No injuries were reported but one firefighter fell into a sinkhole inside the house. The firefighter is okay.
