Here’s what a Formula E race in Vancouver could look like (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Vancouver just got one step closer to seeing a Formula E race taking place in the city in 2022

In a recent city council meeting, Vancouver councillors confirmed the city will hold a Formula E world championship event expected to take place in July 2022.

A motion to council explains the city has been approached by OSS Group, a private Canadian promoter of the Formula E World Championship, to host a two-day conference focused on climate and sustainability, two music concerts, and a one-day electric vehicle race in False Creek. The motion states the event would generate significant economic benefit to the city and support the recovery of Vancouver’s tourism sector gutted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Formula E is one of a variety of world championships run by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (including Formula One).

OSS Group has promised to “engage in robust dialogue with False Creek area residents throughout the race planning process” to address impacts on the neighbourhood like road closures for 48-hours during the event, the blocking of some parking entrances on Quebec street. The motion was passed in a 9-1 vote on April 28 with only councillor Jean Swanson voting in opposition, while Mayor Kennedy Stewart was absent. 

To get a feel for how a Formula E race would look in Vancouver, we took a look at some photos of what race tracks look like in other cities around the world. The OSS Group has also published a race map that goes through the Concord Lands, along Pacific Boulevard between Griffiths Way and Quebec Street, and along Quebec Street between Pacific Boulevard and Central Street. Grandstands along the route are expected to seat 56,000 people.
