A project proposed for the northern boundary of the False Creek Flats area is growing...and it hasn't even been built yet.
A development application for 456 Prior St. shows a structure with twin 19-storey towers. The multipurpose building would include 303 residences, office space, and commercial space at ground level, along with public areas. A sports court area is also included.
A previous rezoning application for the site showed a similar, though slightly, smaller project, with only 262 residential units. However, how space is divided in the project has been reworked, so the overall structure is only about 10,000 sq. ft. bigger.
The new design includes 39 studios, 115 one-bedroom units, 22 bedroom-and-den combos, 109 two-bedroom units, and 18 three-bedroom units.
The location is on the northern edge of the 450-acre False Creek Flats neighbourhood and next to where the new St. Paul's Hospital is planned.
The area was a part of False Creek up until 1917 when it was filled in for new railway infrastructure. In 2017 the False Creek Flats plan was adopted by the city in an effort to redevelop the land, increasing the number of jobs in the area from 8,000 to 30,000.
