The Main Street Car Free Day will include a full road closure and several vendors to check out at the popular event.
As one of Vancouver's busiest thoroughfares, Main Street welcomes visitors to browse a host of some of the city's most unique eateries, trendy boutiques, cool thrift stores, and many other services. It will be closed to traffic from East 10th Avenue to King Edward Avenue on Saturday, Sept.16 from noon until 7 p.m.
Commercial Drive held the festival's first Car Free Day of the year on Saturday, Sept. 9, greeting throngs of locals and visitors to the typically non-pedestrian street to enjoy the extra space with loved ones and new friends.
The Main Street event will also focus on a "car-free ethos," encouraging attendees to leave their gas-guzzlers at home and hop on a bike, walk, or use public transportation.
Not unlike the Commerical Drive event, there will be several spots to enjoy some food and beverages, as well as to watch live music and other entertainment. To keep as few vehicles on site as possible, there will only be four food trucks.
Car Free Days in Vancouver
A third and final car-free day will take place on Saturday, Sept. 24 along Denman Street, with a road closure from Davie Street to Robson Street in the West End.
The organizers note that their "mission is to nurture and grow car-free spaces and culture in collaboration with local communities."
In keeping with its mission statement, the Car Free festival chooses locally-based vendors in each of the neighbourhood precincts, focusing on reducing emissions from vehicles and creating more space for people to enjoy themselves on the street.
