No fireworks show planned for Vancouver on New Year's Eve

Don't go seeking fireworks on Dec. 31.

Fireworks won't be happening in Vancouver on New Year's Eve this year.

If anyone cranes their neck to the sky at Vancouver's harbour at midnight on Dec. 31, 2024, they'll only see seagulls, residential towers, and the night sky.

The fireworks show that used to take place over the water near Canada Place and the Vancouver Convention Centre is still on hiatus.

The display, most recently sponsored by Concord Pacific, hasn't happened for several years, though that hasn't stopped some from looking for them after counting down to the beginning of the new year.

The cost of the event has gotten quite high in recent years, and popularity has somewhat waned. In an email to V.I.A. in 2023, Concord Pacific noted costs were too high.

"It's an expensive endeavour. We offered the society to double our commitment from the last year it ran, but that doesn’t even cover half the costs," they stated a year ago.

Initially, a countdown to 2025 existed, but the website for the event has been decommissioned. Social media accounts for the event haven't been updated for years.

For those seeking fireworks, Cypress Mountain and Grouse Mountain have both announced shows happening New Year's Eve (though they're happening a few hours before midnight).

In Vancouver, private fireworks are not allowed without certification and a permit from the city.
