Pedestrians and cyclists who normally travel along the Oak Street Bridge will need to plan an alternate route until September.
According to B.C. Transportation, the northbound access onto the Oak Street Bridge for pedestrians and cyclists will be closed for transit and cycling improvement, which is part of the BC Highway 99 Tunnel Program.
Last summer, the provincial government finally announced it was replacing the aging tunnel with an eight-lane immersed tube tunnel to the tune of $4.15 billion and with a completion date of 2030.
Originally, a 10-lane bridge was planned to replace the George Massey Tunnel, but this was scrapped in 2017 by the then newly formed BC NDP government.
Cyclists and pedestrians can take the Canada Line Bridge as an alternate route across the Fraser River.
The Arthur Laing Bridge is also an option, but only for experienced cyclists.
The southbound side of the Oak Street Bridge is unaffected.
