An oil-like slick appeared on top of False Creek on Monday, Dec. 4 according to witnesses. On Dec. 12, the Canadian Coast Guard indicated the source remains unclear, but that the situation is stable.

An oily sheen that appeared on False Creek more than a week ago remains in parts of the little inlet, despite efforts by the Canadian Coast Guard to find its source and stop it.

The situation remains stable according to a statement from the Coast Guard, with crews on the Vancouver waterway containing the substance. A sorbent boom is being used to collect recoverable "product."

"There are also some patches of rainbow sheen around Spruce Harbour and Heather Civic marinas, but they are non-recoverable and will dissipate," states the Coast Guard.

The federal agency has been working with the city and provincial governments to find the source of the mystery spill, but no source has been determined.

It first appeared on Monday, Dec. 4, during the heavy rains that hit the Metro Vancouver area.

A witness told V.I.A. last week that when they checked back the following day, the substance was still there: "I saw the oil slick on the water by the shoreline."

Previously, the Coast Guard stated the substance wasn't a safety concern to boaters and citizens in the area.
