Four people were arrested after a 63-year-old man was stabbed while helping a liquor store security guard this weekend.

The man, who was walking near Olympic Village Square around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night (Nov. 23), intervened when he saw a security guard at a liquor store trying to stop a shoplifter, according to the Vancouver Police Department (VPD).

When the man intervened, he was stabbed, reads a press release from the VPD.

The suspect in both the shoplifting and stabbing then fled the scene with three other people.

The VPD arrived on scene and helped the man, who was seriously injured and bleeding badly.

Officers also retrieved security images from the store. Around midnight, officers patrolling near Robson and Granville streets found the suspect and his group.

All four were arrested.

The suspect, a 21-year-old man from Surrey, was released Sunday and is expected to face charges once an investigation has been completed.

The other three, an 18-year-old male from Richmond, a 16-year-old female from Surrey, and a 16-year-old female from New Westminster, were also released on bail. Their fate depends on what the investigation learns.

"We wish the victim a full recovery, and we’re grateful to have made quick arrests in this case,” says VPD Sgt. Steve Addison in the release.
