Sidesaddle Bikes in East Vancouver has announced it's permanently closing on March 21, 2025.

A bike business in East Vancouver says its decision to close up shop next month was not by choice.

Sidesaddle Bikes has announced it'll permanently close on March 21 after 10 years at its 3469 Commercial St location.

In an Instagram post on Thursday, Feb. 20, the outdoor and sporting goods boutique explained while it's proud to have served the biking community, the situation has become daunting to keep the doors open.

"We won't sugarcoat things [...] The conditions for operating a small business, in Vancouver specifically and Canada more broadly, have become too difficult and too scary to continue," the statement reads.

Sidesaddle also said politicians of the last two decades — civic, provincial and federal — should be held accountable for departing small businesses.

"Things would be different if government at any level showed a sincere interest in securing the three H's for Canadian citizens: Housing, Health, and an Honest Economy (as opposed to one based on money laundering, organized crime and fraud)," the shop added.

"If you don't like this outcome, do your research, read widely, and vote accordingly."

Sidesaddle also said it's taken pride in paying its employees a living wage while providing goods and services to customers.

"We've had successes and setbacks, more of each than expected," the shop added, noting it's incredibly grateful for the community's support, including the "friendly randoms."

Wave of support

Sidesaddle describes its establishment as women-focused, but is still welcome to all riders.

The company sells bikes that range from mountain and BMX to hybrids and cruisers, including children's.

As well as parts and tires, its shelves hold apparel, cycling shoes, pumps and helmets.

Word of the business' departure has led to appreciation and encouragement from the public.

"Side Saddle was always my go-to for repairs, advice, and gear," said one cyclist.

"I discovered your business back in 2020 and bought an awesome cargo bike that I ride (almost) daily," said another.

"I felt safe and enjoyed my experiences there," a third post read.

Sidesaddle is set to sell down its stock between now and March 21.

The shop will also uphold any appointments currently booked for its service department, but no new ones will be taken.
