Vancouver Is Awesome polled 1135 readers and asked the question: What's the best Halloween song?
The poll ran from Oct. 27-Oct. 31 and garnered 1135 votes, of which we can determine 456 are from within the community. Taking the top spot is a spooky season favourite, Bobby Pickett's Monster Mash.
Originally written in 1962, many of the sound effects had to be created in the studio. The sound of a coffin being opened was made by pulling a rusty nail out of wood with a hammer and the bubbling came from blowing through a straw in a glass of water.
Arguably the most successful novelty song of all time, the Monster Mash has reached the top 100 music chart three times in its nearly 60-year history. It first broke into the charts when it was first released in 1962, then again in 1970 peaking at #91, and again in 1972 when it went all the way to #10.
