One of the Vancouver Police Department’s busiest nights of the year, the department laid out its strategy to keep everyone safe this Halloween weekend.
Going hand in hand with the expected increase in 9-1-1 calls, the VPD will have extra police officers working in high-traffic areas of the city. Teams will be dedicated to the Granville Entertainment District and Gastown, as well as schools and parks. As well, the VPD warns against using realistic-looking prop weapons as part of your outfit this Sunday.
“Costume weaponry has been an issue for police in the past,” states a recent VPD release. “This includes plastic handguns and hatchets, and imitation swords.”
In general, if weapons appear to be real the VPD will hear about it, explains VPD Cnst. Tania Visintin.
“As a general reminder, we want people to either not carry this type of prop, or make it very clear that it is an imitation,” Visintin said.
Motorists, cyclists, and parents are also reminded to be extra cautious on Halloween night.
The VPD also offered the following safe trick-or-treating tips:
- use reflective tape, glow sticks, or flashlights to improve visibility
- young children should be accompanied by an adult when trick-or-treating
- stay in well-lit areas and only go to houses that have lights on
