The Vancouver Police Department and the Metro Vancouver Transit Police are looking into a recent crime spree that saw over two dozen bus windows shattered in just two weeks.
Since Jan. 17, police have determined that 26 windows have been broken by projectiles. From reviewing video from inside the buses, investigators have determined the windows were shattered while the buses were in motion in the early morning hours between Gore and Cambie streets. Investigators believe whoever is launching them is likely doing so from outside the buses.
“We believe someone may be launching projectiles at buses as they travel along East Hastings Street in the Downtown Eastside,” said Constable Tania Visintin, VPD. “The frequency of these incidents is increasing and we’re worried someone could get hurt.”
Amanda Steed, a constable with the Metro Vancouver Transit Police said that in each case, the broken windows weren’t immediately noticed by the drivers or reported by the passenger. Steed added that the damage was only noticed until after the drivers finished their shift.
“We know how concerning these incidents may be for those using transit, specifically people travelling on buses,” Steed said. “This is a priority for us and we’re working together to find out who is responsible and to hold them accountable.”
