VPD has released details surrounding the first murder of 2023, including a photo of the suspect.

Vancouver Police have released details surrounding the first murder of 2023 and released a photo of the suspect.

A Downtown Eastside man was found badly burned during a suspicious fire last month. Police say that they did not initially release information "due to the sensitive nature of the investigation" but that they have since been able to secure evidence that allows them to share more about the case.

The victim has been identified as 34-year-old Jeff Jeanty.

He was discovered around midnight on Jan. 3 by Vancouver Fire Rescue Services responding to an outdoor fire near Powell Street and Raymur Avenue.

Investigators have released photos of an unknown woman in her 20s whom they believe to be a suspect in this case and who was captured on camera in the Downtown Eastside at the time of the murder.

She is believed to be about 5’8” tall, between 120 and 140 pounds, with a fair complexion and she had long dark hair in a ponytail at the time. She was wearing a black ball cap with a white logo on the front, a black jacket over a dark shirt, blue jeans, and black shoes with white soles.

Police are asking the public for help in identifying her. Anyone with information is asked to call VPD’s Homicide Unit at 604-717-2500.
