East Van has historically been known for its working-class residents, food and arts scene, so naturally Stephen begins his exploration at New Town Bakery in Chinatown.
Next, he meets up with agent Karen Carter as she steps off her motorcycle and into Strathcona Beer Co., after which they visit local residents Grace and Chelsea and their four kids, who are fixing up a heritage home.
Following a taste at The Drive Canteen and DownLow Chicken Shack with owner Doug, Stephen cools off at La Casa Gelato and learns about East Van’s Italian and Portuguese heritage.
Next, historian Aaron Chapman at the Rio Theatre explains how East Van got its working-class roots and its sense of community pride.
To understand what the future holds for the area, developer Barrett Sprowson takes Stephen through their plans for a new community.
At Rise Up Marketplace, Stephen meets Roger and samples more cuisine while learning about the history of East Van’s Hogan’s Alley and Black community and what the promise of development means for both current and new residents.
Later, he meets a couple living in East Van with their baby, and Karen then explains what family living in the area could be like for homeseekers. Barrett follows up to tell Stephen what developers are planning to retain the feeling of East Van while accommodating newcomers.
To understand the arts scene in the area, Stephen heads to Slice of Life Art Gallery Inc., followed by a wrestling match to round out the impact the journey has had on him.
