Here’s how you can help one of B.C.’s busiest hospitals during the postal disruption

As the Canada Post disruption stretches from weeks to months, the effects are becoming more obvious everywhere.

And the charitable sector is no different.

That’s why Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation (RCHF) is reminding donors of other ways to give without using the postal service.

Donors are encouraged to help with life-changing efforts at the hospital through three alternatives to mail: donations directly through the organization’s website; calling the foundation’s office at 604-520-4388; or dropping by the foundation’s office, which is located just to the right of the main entrance of Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH).

“We have a generous match donation right now with all donations directed toward mental health care at Royal Columbian Hospital being matched up to $1.5 million which will continue until Jan. 31,” explains foundation spokesperson, Melissa Davis. “Any donation, big or small, can make a big impact on those that are needing the life-saving care provided at RCH.”

Supporting essential care at RCH

RCH is the only hospital in B.C. with cardiac, trauma, neurosciences, high-risk maternity and neonatal intensive care on one site. It’s a place of rest and care for the province’s most seriously ill and injured patients, serving one in three British Columbians.

RCHF, an independent charitable organization, was created in 1978 to raise funds for the hospital’s first CT scanner. Since then, its mission has been to support the hospital in saving lives, restoring health and providing comfort to seriously injured and ill patients of all ages.

Fast forward to the present day and RCHF now raises millions of dollars each year to fund major projects, priority equipment needs, facility enhancements, research, education and innovation at the hospital.

Donor support needed this season

This time of year, the need for donors is perhaps most urgent as roughly 30% of donations come into the foundation in December.

“A large majority of donors still send their donations through physical mail,” Davis says. “As with many non-profits this year we have done our best to connect with donors through email and phone but our donor mailings for campaigns like Giving Tuesday and year-end giving are what we count on the most for the year.”

Through its loyal and generous donor base, the foundation is now focused on funding major projects, including support for the soon-to-open Jim Pattison Acute Care Tower, priority equipment needs throughout the hospital, facility enhancements, research, education and innovation at RCH.

Slated for a 2025 opening date, the Jim Pattison Acute Care Tower will provide generational benefits for tens of thousands of B.C. residents: additional beds for intensive care, cardiac care, obstetrical and medical/surgical patients, an expanded maternity unit, a state-of-the-art emergency department and so much more.

“Thousands of individuals, businesses, community groups and foundations in surrounding communities and across the region provide generous support to help RCHF achieve its vision — to inspire giving and grow funding so patients have access to the best in health care at Royal Columbian Hospital,” Davis says.
