Hot deal: You can fly direct from Vancouver to Mexico for $141

These prices are significantly lower than usual.

Round-trip, direct flights from Vancouver to Mexico cost under $300 to kick off the new year.

Ultra-low-cost carrier Flair Airlines offers a jaw-dropping deal on the route connecting Vancouver International Airport (YVR) with Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) in Puerto Vallarta.

A one-way flight departing Vancouver for Puerto Vallarta on Sunday, Feb. 23 costs $141 directly with the budget carrier. According to Google Flights, this ticket is unlikely to drop below this price; it is considered "low" for economy and about $60 cheaper than usual (see slides two to four).

The next cheapest, nonstop options for one-way flights on the same date are with WestJet and Air Canada, with prices starting at $268 and $279, respectively.

Tickets booked in Flair's lowest fare class don't include carry-on luggage and travellers must pay for checked baggage and seat selection. However, Canada's largest airlines also require passengers to pay for the add-ons. Travellers should factor in those extra charges for booking these low-cost flights.

Round-trip flight from Vancouver to Puerto Vallarta

Return trips from Vancouver to Puerto Vallarta also cost less with Flair this winter.

For example, a flight departing Vancouver on Sunday, March 2 and returning from Puerto Vallarta on Monday, March 10 costs $289 booked directly with the airline (see slide three).

According to Google Flights, this price is considered "low" for economy or about $100 cheaper than usual (see slide four).

In contrast, the next-best option for travellers looking for nonstop, round-trip flights is with WestJet, with prices starting at nearly double the cost ($442). The next lowest price is with Aeromexico at $532 but the itinerary includes one stopover in Mexico City.

Travellers should also consider the risks associated with visiting Mexico, including a rise in criminal activity and kidnapping. While Canada doesn't advise travellers against visiting the country, tourists should exercise a high degree of caution

Puerto Vallarta is located in Mexico's Jalisco state. Canada's advisory specifically warns travellers against visiting areas in Jalisco within 50 km of the Michoacán border. However, Puerto Vallarta is located over 550 km away from the border.
