The night we got in we were treated to a dinner at the incredibly-German Black Forest Steak & Schnitzel House, about a two minute walk from the Resort on the main drive. Our host (an incredibly-German woman) said my last name out loud and then asked me - in English - if I spoke German. Sadly, Mr Kronbauer does not speak German so I said "No". In English.
Feels like Germany... I assume
Not only do I not speak German but I admit I'd never eaten a truly German meal before our visit here. We started with escargot then for mains my wife went for the schnitzel and I enjoyed a scallop and prawn dish. Young Arlo of course went for something that was as closest as he could get to spaghetti and meatballs, so we had a range of things on a scale from from incredibly-German to not quite-as-German.
The next morning the family awoke feeling a little closer to the folks who handed our last name down to us and we headed to Cookin Kim's for breakfast. Also very close to the Resort, they serve up the standard breakfast fare you know and love. Arlo loves strawberry pancakes, my wife and I love bacon and eggs. They delivered great on both counts and it felt like we were rubbing shoulders with some of the locals and not as much of a tourist crowd.
No photos of lunch to share with you unfortunately. I went out on a sturgeon fishing charter and had sandwiches on the water and just as I was halfway through eating a fish the size of me took the bait and it ended up on the bottom of the boat (the sandwich, not the fish). We'll get to the man-sized fish story in the next part of this series but for now have a sneak peek at this salmon roe that we put on our hooks.
Dinner in The Copper Room inside the Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa was a fantastic time! It's a giant old ballroom with a live band that plays every night. There's a dancefloor in the front of a stage for adults as well as a little mini floor on the side for kids to shake a leg on.
Katie had crab cakes, we shared some scallops, I had halibut with local hazelnuts, Arlo had the most basic salmon dish he could imagine and the sorbet was practically the best dessert I have ever eaten. Ever in my life. There was an ice cream bar that I ate on our trip to Sonora Resort last year that this sorbet dish stands next to in a tie as the best desserts I have ever eaten. Ever in my life. I'm not an eloquent (nor highly qualified) food writer so I can't tell you exactly why but the entire experience of cracking off the sorbet/icing bottom and scooping it up mixed with the sheer flavour that complimented the halibut I had just eaten... it was just a perfect experience and I am still left thinking about it now days later.
The next morning was checkout time and the quick 90 minute drive back to Vancouver, and we started our day with a buffet breakfast at the Lakeside Cafe. Katie and I gathered almost exactly the same meal from the generous offering so I just shot this single photo of mine. Arlo decided to go fussy and have cereal and a whole lot of watermelon.
