Residents of the Lower Mainland were treated to a dazzling lunar display last night as a supermoon illuminated partly clear skies.

The Old Farmer's Almanac notes that the Pink Moon got its name from, "heralding the appearance of the “moss pink,” or wild ground phlox—one of the first spring flowers." They note that Native peoples would give distinctive names to each reoccurring full moon to mark the change of seasons. As such, many of these names arose when Native Americans first interacted with colonialists.

With that being said, Space.com notes that the April full moon also goes by other names including the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and the Full Fish Moon.

Since the pink moon qualified as a 'supermoon,' it will look a whopping 15 per cent brighter and seven per cent bigger than a regular full moon due to its proximity to earth.

#2roosters2piggies2metresminimum WFH #dadblog #miniblog Day 13! Supermoon! I read something about the supermoon (biggest appearing moon of the year) this morning and made a mental note to take a peek with Wells tonight but in typical Wells/Daddy style I completely forgot until I heard “Moon! Moon!” coming from the living room as he we were winding down. This kid loves a sweet full moon. Let’s hope is doesn’t cause our family any weirdness sleepwise. Daddy tired! QOTD: Wells chucked Sophie the giraffe at Reese which caused her to cry for a second. Initially he refused to apologize and I was not happy. In the time we were arguing Reese picked Sophie up and in typical Reese style began quietly and happily chewing on her. Wells: “Reese is happy now.” That’s not the point, Wells! 😤 Side note: This kid is stub-born when you tell him to say he’s sorry but throws around “I’m sorry” unprompted like a Canadian going out of style at all other times. 😐😂

Stargazers should opt to travel as far away from city lights as possible in order to avoid light pollution that will obscure the clarity of heavenly bodies. While this works best in more remote places, anywhere that has a higher elevation will also provide more ideal viewing conditions.
