The City of White Rock is upping the measures in place to deter visitors from lingering at their waterfront. Starting Friday, April 10 - the Good Friday holiday - White Rock's Waterfront Promenade will be closed to the public.
Fencing was erected around the promenade on Wednesday, April 8.
White Rock Mayor Darryl Walker made the decision to curtail access to the popular walkway in anticipation of visitors to the area taking in the sunshine over the long weekend.
“Everyone loves our City by the Sea. The sandy shores, fish and chips and Canada’s Longest Pier are major attractions. Right now, starting on Easter weekend, we are saying ‘This is not the time to visit,'" said Walker.
Previously, White Rock closed the parking lots in the Waterfront Promenade area, including the West Beach Parkade, as well as reduced parking to 15 minutes on maximum on the typically-busy north side of Marine Drive. In March, as well, White Rock closed their iconic - and refurbished - Pier.
"Right now, the most important thing is battling COVID-19, and protecting our community’s health and our economy," added Walker. "Let’s fight COVID-19 by staying near our homes, maintaining a safe, physical distance, and reaching out to people through social media, Skype, Zoom or any other technology that brings us together.
We are in this together, and we’ll get through this together.”
