Those looking forward to 2024 should see rain clouds on the horizon.
The forecast for the new year begins with a relatively dry period and blue sky, but will quickly get grey says Environment Canada meteorologist Gary Dickinson.
The week will start off with a mainly cloudy day on Jan. 1, 2024. Highs will still be warmer than the usual (Dickinson notes Vancouver should be sitting around 6 C for the New Year) with an expected 8 C Monday.
Dickinson notes that the warm weather trend is one that is expected to continue throughout the week.
"It'll be slightly cooler than the period between Christmas and New Year's Eve where we set records," he explains. "But there will still be highs between 7 and 9 degrees."
However, after the first day of 2024, Vancouver can expect the "typical" weather for January.
"It looks like we're going to have a series of weather systems that clip coastal B.C., particular southern B.C.," he says.
The systems will be travelling up from the south and will bring showers and some periods of rain, but no heavy rain. Weatherhood's hyper-local forecast shows precipitation likelihoods ranging from 33 per cent to 81 per cent, depending on the day of the week and neighbourhood.
"Precipitation amounts don't look too intense," Dickinson says, adding Environment Canada doesn't foresee the need for any rain warnings for the Lower Mainland due to the systems.
"It's just a typical January weather pattern," he says. "A typical wet El Nino type of pattern."
That's expected to last until at least Friday, Jan. 5, Dickinson says.
