Vancouver weather: Temperatures over 20 C to follow 3 rainstorms

Sunshine will follow the rain...but it will take several days.

The Vancouver weather forecast includes three storm systems this week but sunny days are expected after they clear.

Starting on Friday, May 31, V.I.A.'s Downtown Centre Weatherhood station shows a daytime high of 17 C and an overnight low of 9. While clouds are expected to roll in overnight, it is unclear exactly when it will start raining (see slide two).

If the weather cooperates, locals might see a spellbinding aurora borealis display. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a geomagnetic storm watch for Friday, May 31 to June 1 and the northern lights could be viewable overhead.

While another northern lights display is possible across most of Canada on Saturday, wet weather is expected to roll into the Lower Mainland in the wee hours of the morning.

The downtown area should receive a modest amount of rain with up to 4 mm expected. Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 16 C and a low of 12 C.

Vancouver weather forecast includes potent rainstorms

The showers should let up by Saturday evening but a second, more potent storm is expected to arrive Sunday.

Environment Canada meteorologist Lisa Irvin told V.I.A. in a previous interview that the storm should bring moderate to heavy precipitation to the region and is stronger than those typically seen during the late spring.

The storm may also produce stronger winds in the Strait of Georgia and outages are possible. People planning to go camping on the weekend should be cautious of falling tree branches and other hazards.

Monday's forecast also includes ample rainfall, while a third system moving in on Tuesday may bring even more moisture to the region. While the estimates may change in the coming days, as much as 36 mm of rain may fall through Tuesday.

The sunshine is expected to shine again next week on Wednesday, with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 18 C during the day. Thursday's forecast also includes a mix of sun and cloud; temperatures are expected to climb over 20 C.
