SUGIYAMA MEATS!

POSTED February 10, 2010 BY Jef Choy

Last summer I blew up my favourite Japanese fish shop in Angel Seafood, now I bring to you the meat equivalent.  For those of you who are not familiar with Sukiyaki is, it’s a Japanese style hotpot, more hot, less pot though.  The meat used is sliced very thin, kinda like a cheese steak.   You can find similar cuts at places like T&T, and you can also get the real deal at Fujiya, but like Angel Seafood, why not just go right to the source.

Sugiyama meats in Richmond has been around as long as I can remember, it’s tucked amongst all the body shops and cabinet places at 12191 Bridgeport Rd.

MORE SUKIYAKI

I’m sure the retail makes up a very small part of the business so bring cash and it’s not uncommon for them to be out if you go later in the day.  As you can see, they have a few different grades of Sukiyaki as well as other selected meats.  It’s a bit of a trek but when you double it up with a trip to Ikea, it’s worth it.

Sukiyaki is really easy to make…here’s a recipe .  And for those of you who are still reading…I’d like to end this post with a story…no…instead…a slow jam.

just hope it’s not dolphin meat, though.. yikes.

How does it compare to Nikuya? Doesn’t seem to have the variety looking at the menu pic you have… and if you have never been to Nikuya (Hastings closed but Richmond was always the source) then you owe yourself a trip there.
