New Vancouver art gallery a place for 'intercultural exchange'

The group wants to "counteract common misconceptions by highlighting the relatability and universality of our experiences"

In less than two years, Vancouver's Iranian Visual Arts (VIVA) Alliance was founded, began organizing art shows, and now has an art gallery of its own in Railtown.

The Media Res Gallery will have its first exhibition from March 27 to May 2 featuring the work of Afghan-Canadian artist Hangama Amiri, who was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and moved to Canada as a young adult.

"Hangama is known for her textile wall hangings that reflect how women’s lives are influenced by ideas of gender and social norms in Afghanistan and beyond," according to a press release from VIVA.

Amiri's show fits in well with the new gallery's goals.

What is the Media Res Gallery?

"We envision VIVA Alliance serving as a catalyst for further productive intercultural exchange," the organization tells V.I.A. in an email.

The organization formed in 2023 after an art show at Yaletown's Roundhouse Community Centre. Iranian artists are underrepresented in the region, even as the community grows, a VIVA representative explains.

"This organization is comprised of a creative group of art professionals and academics dedicated to increasing opportunity and visibility for Iranian Canadian artists through curatorial services and support," reads the statement from VIVA Alliance.

It goes on to explain that it's committed to working with and including other BIPOC groups and leaders with the goal of "contributing to the cultural enrichment of our society."

"We hope that VIVA Alliance’s projects will help counteract common misconceptions by highlighting the relatability and universality of our experiences, struggles, ideals, and aspirations," reads the statement.

Amiri's exhibit runs March 27 to May 2, 2025 at the Media Res Gallery on the fourth floor of 353 Railway St. It will be open Tuesday to Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (except Saturdays, when it closes at 5 p.m.)
