Hot, salty, crispy fries. Melty, gooey cheese curds. Rich, velvety gravy. Poutine is the iconic Canadian junk food, and the annual week-long celebration of its glory is indeed set to return for 2021 as La Poutine Week reveals its on yet again at the start of February.
The premise is pretty simple: Eat poutine during La Poutine Week and go online and vote for your favourites.
This glorious event celebrating Canada’s unofficial national drunk food takes place the first week of February each year, and features poutine dishes submitted by restaurants and bars nationwide.
For 2021, the fest's ninth consecutive year, La Poutine Week is all about getting that decadent dish in your hot little hands via take-out or delivery (or, where permitted, for dine-in).
While the event is wildly popular in its native Quebec, the fest has steadily expanded nationwide over the years with a few Metro Vancouver and B.C. restaurants signing up to take part in the friendly - and flavourful - competition.
“This year, more than ever, every poutine that will be consumed becomes a mark of loyalty – for restaurants, for us, for our community. We are here to support our restaurants by driving sales through a national platform that celebrates our most recognized and beloved dish. The restaurant industry and the foodie community need good news, and La Poutine Week is one of them," says La Poutine Week co-founder Na’eem Adam in a media release.
Last year, spots in Vancouver dishing up their take on the Canadian classic included places like Bells & Whistles, Moxie's, and Pourhouse.
We can expect to learn which local restaurants will be taking part in La Poutine Week in the coming weeks as the big week gets closer. Stay tuned!
