Popular Italian cafe and grocer opening second location in former Chinatown coffee shop

The old Matchstick is getting a new tenant

The old Matchstick coffee shop in Chinatown is turning into a new Mercato di Luigi, the Italian cafe/grocer hybrid that's part of the Kitchen Table Group of Vancouver restaurants.

A year after the first Mercato di Luigi opened, a second Vancouver location is on the way.

From the group that brought the city Ask For Luigi, Di Beppe, and Giovane Caffe (Kitchen Table Group), the original Mercato is a cafe/grocer hybrid at 580 E 12th Ave.

Signs are now up for a second spot at 213 E Georgia St, where Matchstick closed their Chinatown outpost late last year.

Along with the name of the incoming shop, there are signs for wine, pasta, food, pastries, and coffee - all Mercato staples.

If the second is similar to the first it'll offer breakfast sandwiches in the morning and pasta for lunch and early dinners; the original runs from 8 or 9 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m. Along with dine-in or to-go options, there are ready-to-eat pastas and other foods.

The new Mercato adds to the already substantial Italian offerings in that area (including FiorinoTosi, and Via Pasta).

V.I.A. has reached out to Kitchen Table, for more details and will update when more information is available.
