You've probably heard of cruffins and cronuts, but what about a "moissant"?
The mash-up of a croissant with mochi has been dubbed "moissant" by Vancouver's Broye Cafe and the novelty item is catching the attention of treat-seekers across the city.
The charming Fraser Street coffee, bubble tea, and bakeshop, which specializes in Japanese and Vietnamese fusion treats - recently launched its line of mochi croissants in an array of fun flavours, like Mango Yuzu, Salted Egg Yolk, and Vietnamese Coffee.
The pastries look like typical flavoured croissants from the outside, with colourful creamy frosting toppings, but once you get towards the middle you'll find that distinct gooey, stretchy, chewy mochi.
Mochi - a sticky rice cake from Japanese cuisine with ties to other iterations in various Asian culinary traditions - and croissants have been mashed up in creations popularized around the world for the past several years. Singapore's Brotherbird made waves in 2018 for their mochi croissants, as did San Francisco's Rolling Out Cafe, which took things a step further and trademarked their "Mochissant."
While it seems Vancouver's Broye Cafe has a lock on the term "moissant," Charisma Social House Bakery offers mochi croissants, and Beaucoup Bakery has been known to roll some out as a limited edition treat.
