Over the past 12 years, VTFF has presented more than 100 Taiwanese films and filmmakers as part of an ongoing celebration of Taiwanese art, culture and cinematic prowess. Established in 2007, it’s also the first large non-profit event in Canada focused on promoting Taiwanese films.
This year’s festival programming includes 10 feature-length films, director Q+A’s, and a short film screening, offering a remarkable exploring of the past, present and future Taiwanese culture. With exceptional filmmaking traversing multiple genres and narrative techniques, Vancouver Taiwanese Film Festival is must for casual moviegoers and film-buffs alike.

Father (Documentary) - Friday June 22, 2018
Taiwanese glove puppeteer, Chen Hsi-huang, is the eldest son of Li Tien-lu, the legendary Taiwanese glove puppet master. But Chen’s relationship with his father had always been strained, for he has his mother’s surname, as the result of his father marrying into a clan higher in the social ladder. This stunning exploration of family and the antique art of puppeteering will be highlighted by a Q+A with visiting director Yang, Li-chou.
Formosa 3D (Documentary) - Saturday June 23, 2018
From the migration of purple butterflies to the crafting of bamboo steam baskets, Charlie Chu, Taiwan’s leading 3D film director has spent a decade painstakingly capturing the island’s beauty. Featuring 100 traditional craftsmen, Formosa 3D is a stunning montage of Taiwan’s nature, varied landscapes and trade culture. DirectorCharlie Chu will be in attendance for a post-screening Q+A.

Who Killed Cock Robin? (Thriller) - Saturday June 23, 2018
On discovering that his second-hand car was involved in a fatal hit-and-run incident that he witnessed nine years earlier, journalist Wang Yi-Chi reopens the unsolved cold case. When he is unceremoniously fired for disgracing a public official, Wang must go it alone, uncovering a deluge of secrets, scandals and criminal activity along the way. Directed by Cheng Wei-hao.
Take Me to the Moon (Fantasy) - Saturday June 23, 2018
Romance meets time travel in director Hsieh Chun-yi’s Take Me to the Moon. As Wang tries to sabotage the audition that would precede downfall the downfall of his high school crush’s musical career, the price of success becomes a running debate between the two would-be lovers. Take Me to the Moon is a nostalgia tour that relishes its recreated sights of 1997 Taipei.
Alifu, The Prince/ss (Drama) - Sunday June 24, 2018
Alifu is a 25-year-old man who works at a salon in the city. However, as the only son of an aboriginal tribal chief, he is torn between realizing his dream of becoming a woman and inheriting the chief position handed down by his father. Directed by Wang Yu-lin.
