Zipair continues to offer return trips from Vancouver to Tokyo for under $1,000 for travel in 2025.
Japan Airlines' "basic" carrier, Zipair, launched its first Canadian route to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in March 2024, reducing the cost of direct, nonstop travel to Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) by hundreds of dollars.
The airline added additional flights after overwhelming success with its initial ticket sales, increasing its thrice-weekly service to five days over the summer.
Travellers who only want to purchase a one-way ticket to the Land of the Rising Sun can find the cheapest options departing next month.
For instance, a direct flight from YVR to NRT on Thursday, May 22, costs $361 including all taxes and fees. The cheapest ticket is available directly through Zipair, meaning you don't have to book through a third party, which can sometimes be a hassle (see slides two and three).
This price is considered "low" for economy and is roughly $220 cheaper than usual, according to Google Flights.
Prices for one-way trips skyrocket for travel dates after May, starting from $540 to over $1,000. Prices don't drop until September departures, but don't dip under $400. In other words, folks looking to travel on a one-way ticket to Japan shouldn't hold their breath for cheaper options. Google Flights notes that this "price isn't likely to drop."
Round-trip flights from Vancouver to Tokyo
Unlike a one-way trip, round-trip flights from Vancouver to Japan dip to their lowest price for YVR-NRT trips in the fall. However, travellers can find options for flights on the route in May for under $1,000.
Tickets dip below the $900 mark for numerous date combinations through September and October before rising again in November.
For instance, a flight departing on Tuesday, Sept. 30, from Vancouver and returning from Tokyo on Tuesday, Oct. 7, costs $876. However, travellers must buy tickets separately through the airline to achieve the lowest price. Otherwise, they'll pay slightly more at $894.
This price is considered "low" for economy and is roughly $742 cheaper than usual, according to Google Flights.
Flight prices may change quickly based on seat availability. If you want to secure a price, book the ticket right away (some airlines and travel suppliers allow you to hold seats, although you will need to confirm).
