Trips to Japan can cost significantly less for Metro Vancouver travellers who can wait until the late summer and early fall to get there.
While you might want to soak in Tokyo's bright lights early this year, ticket prices cost several hundred more than they do if you can hold off until the start of September.
Japan Airlines' "basic" carrier Zipair typically offers the best deal on the route. However, the airline's cheapest tickets are sold out for this winter, making prices on competitor carriers cheaper.
All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Air Canada currently offer the cheapest prices for travellers flying directly from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to Narita International Airport (NRT), with one-way flights starting at around $550 in February and March.
Travellers who want to shave around $150 off the cost of their one-way fare can take advantage of a dramatic price drop in the first week of September.
For example, a flight departing Vancouver for Tokyo on Tuesday, Sept. 16 costs $411 directly with Zipair and $402 when booked through third-party agency BudgetAir (see slide two).
This price is considered "low" for economy or about $412 cheaper than the average, according to Google Flights (see slide three).
The low-cost, one-way options from YVR to NRT continue through Oct. 25.
Round-trip flights from Vancouver to Tokyo with Zipair
Metro Vancouverites can also score the low-cost deal on return trips starting in September.
Travellers planning on visiting Japan earlier this year can find the cheapest options with ANA and Air Canada. Prices for the round-trip option start at around $1,011 when booked through a third party in March.
Round-trip flights from Vancouver to Tokyo drop by several hundred starting in the first week of September and continuing through October with Zipair.
For example, a flight departing Vancouver on Monday, Sept. 8 and returning from Tokyo on Monday, Sept. 15 costs $787 with Zipair or $737 booked through BudgetAir (see slide four).
This price is considered "low" for economy or about $1,088 cheaper than the average, according to Google Flights (see slide five).
