Flights to popular Canadian destinations often cost less when departing from Abbotsford than from Vancouver.
While Abbotsford International Airport (YXX) services considerably fewer routes than Vancouver International Airport (YVR), some flights departing from the Fraser Valley save travellers significant money to major Canadian cities.
Travellers looking for low-cost flights from Vancouver should look at prices from YXX on these routes.
Calgary (YYC)
Albertan cities are typically cheaper to fly to from Abbotsford than Vancouver, with trips to Calgary (YYC) from YXX seeing the greatest price difference.
For example, a flight departing from Vancouver on Thursday, Feb. 6 and returning from Calgary on Sunday, Feb. 9 costs $98 with Flair Airlines.
In contrast, a flight departing from Abbotsford on Thursday, Feb. 20 and returning from Calgary on Monday, Feb. 24 costs $69 with WestJet (but booked through a third-party travel company).
According to Google Flights, this price is considered "low" for economy or $54 cheaper than usual.
Edmonton (YEG)
Flights from Abbotsford to Edmonton (YEG) are also typically cheaper than ones departing from Vancouver.
For instance, a flight departing from Vancouver on Thursday, Feb. 20 and returning from Edmonton on Sunday, Feb. 23 costs $82 with WestJet (but booked through a third-party supplier).
According to Google Flights, this price is considered "low" for the economy or $36 cheaper than usual.
Despite YVR's low ticket price, travellers can still get a cheaper ticket if they fly from Abbotsford. A flight departing YXX on Friday, Feb. 28 and returning from YEG on Monday, March 3 costs $74 with WestJet (but booked through a third-party).
According to Google Flights, this price is considered "low" for the economy or $50 cheaper than usual.
Ottawa (YOW)
Flights from Vancouver to Ottawa (YOW) start at over $200 round-trip. For example, one of the cheapest deals on the route departs YVR on Thursday, Feb. 20 and returns on Wednesday, Feb. 26 and costs $223 with Westjet (but booked through a third-party).
According to Google Flights, this price is considered "low" for economy or $147 cheaper than usual.
Flights from Abbotsford to Ottawa start around $50 less than Vancouver trips. For instance, a flight departing YXX on Tuesday, March 11 and returning from YOW on Tuesday, March 18 costs $158.
Toronto (YYZ)
Flights from YVR to Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport (YYZ) cost substantially less than they did many years ago thanks to the introduction of ultra-low-cost carrier Flair Airlines and other airlines on the busy route.
Flights from YVR and YYX to YYZ cost as little as $176 round-trip and direct on specific dates. However, trips from Vancouver can soar over holidays and peak travel months, including the summer.
Although the cheapest tickets typically cost the same from both airports if you book well in advance, trips booked close to big events and holidays in "The Six" can skyrocket.
