Welcome to the latest in our Super, Neighbours series of blog posts where we highlight incredible travel destinations in British Columbia! |
Salt Spring is the last stop on the "Milk Run", which is the friendly name for the BC Ferries route that weaves through the Southern Gulf Islands. Once you get there, you de-board the ferry, bypass the actual town of Ganges which is the central hub and drive a few minutes north on two lane blacktop until you find yourself at the entrance to the resort, and this sweet gravel road.
The resort has a number of cabins that are right on the water of St Mary Lake, as well as some newer ones (chalets) tucked into the trees a little bit. This was the castle we inhabited for the cabin.
Inside it's like your own little two bedroom house with everything you need to prepare meals and have a cozy weekend.
This is the view from the second story loft bedroom window into the greenest of greens.
The property certainly had a wintery feel when we were there, and the ghosts of summer and the activity that must take place here were evident. Not seen in this photo below are all of the different vessels you can take out on the water. Canoes, kayaks, paddle boats... all included in the price of your stay. There's also a large playground, communal fire pit, ping pong, badminton and more.
We took a rowboat out for an afternoon with hopes of catching one of the trout or bass that call it home, but we left empty handed. If you've read any of my other features on fishing you'll know that "empty handed" means we didn't catch anything but certainly loved every minute of being out there on the water. What's that saying about "a bad day fishing" again?
Thanks to BC Ferries for getting us over to the island and to Green Acres for providing such an amazing experience. We'll be back!
