Colder nightly temperatures predicted for Vancouver this week

The shift in the forecast has prompted the city to open its extreme weather shelters.

Temperatures may fall to around or below 0 C in Vancouver this week.

Vancouver may be in for some chillier nights this week, especially its inland communities.

V.I.A.'s Weatherhood, as well as Environment Canada, is predicting temperatures to drop to around 0 C for the next two nights, March 5 and 6.

For Wednesday, northwest winds may gust up to 40 km/h along coastal communities before easing up and clearing the skies overnight.

Thursday night's forecast also calls for clear skies, but with some precipitation in areas like South Vancouver, Killarney and Langara.

Environment Canada meteorologist Lisa Ervin told V.I.A. a "typical" frontal system made its way into coastal B.C. on Tuesday and the dry trend will persist through Friday with clouds to start rolling into the region.

Ervin said several storms heading south down the B.C. coast may arrive in the Lower Mainland on either Saturday or Sunday.

Vancouver to open overnight shelters

As a result of the predicted freezing temperatures, Vancouver officials are set to open eight extreme weather shelters overnight Wednesday and Thursday.

Shelters can be activated when temperatures are predicted to drop below or when it feels like 0 C with wind chill, according to the city's shelter and winter response strategy.

They can also open up when temperatures reach near 0 C with rainfall "that makes it difficult or impossible for those experiencing homelessness to remain dry."
